Memories of 2012 inaugural Soapbox User Summit

Can you believe it? It’s been one year since we had our inaugural Soapbox User Summit, but I still remember April 19, 2012 like it was yesterday. We had all the PICnetters together from near and far. We had Gunner from Aspiration Tech facilitate and clients attend from DC, Maryland, Connecticut, and New York.

We voted on our own session ideas, broke out into small groups, mingled with the Support Department at PICnet, had a gorgeous location and beautiful weather, and got to learn from accidental techies about their successes and struggles with technology for their own organizations.

It was certainly a productive, worthwhile way to spend a day in Washington, DC. Read more »

Mobile Apps and Your Nonprofit: NTEN Happy Hour, Thursday, 2/28

Mobile apps are all the rage, and since I consider myself a fashionable person, I wanted to make sure one of my NTEN Happy Hours focused on this technology. Luckily, that was very easy with the help of Compuware. Compuware, a tech company focusing on software and best practices services, is sponsoring the February 2013 NTEN happy hour.  Eric Fishman, Senior Director of Information Services & Strategies at the American Psychiatric Association and a client of Compuware’s, will be our speaker. More details below:

What: NTEN February 2013 Happy Hour When: Thursday, February 28, 2013 Where: Buffalo Billiards (1330 19th Street, NW) – we’ll be in the Patio Room Time: 6:00 pm Topic: Eric Fishman will be discussing mobile app development for the American Psychiatric Association

Be sure to RSVP so I can make sure there are enough snacks for all. I hope you can join us!

It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year – NTEN Holiday Happy Hour Time

We’re ending another great year of NTEN Happy Hours by ringing in the holidays a little early! Tonight (Thursday, November 29) at 6 pm at Madhatter DC, we’ll be celebrating with food, fun, and folly. They’ll be FREE prizes to give away as well as complimentary appetizers and drinks specials. So if you’re not too busy trying to fit in your holiday shopping, you should stop by! We’ll be located in the Upside Down room, which is located past the bar on the first floor.

Hope to see you there!

NTEN Partnerships Make Happy Hours Twice as Nice!

As some of you may know, I hold NTEN (nonprofit technology network) Happy Hours once a month. This is a time when we as a community of “accidental techies” get together to discuss the triumphs and tragedies of the job. Add in some food and drink as well as the occasional educational speaker, and we have an excellent way to spend a Thursday evening.

So what can make these NTEN events even better? Well, when we have partners, of course! This month NTEN is in partnership with NetSquared DC for our Happy Hour to be held tonight, Thursday, September 20, 2012 at Local 16. I’m excited to meet various folks from NetSquared as well as mingle with my usual NTEN-ers. And I can’t think of a better way to spend one of the last technical nights of summer than on the beautiful deck of Local 16. We’re meeting from 6 – 8 pm tonight, and there’s still time to register. Hope to see you there!

Double the Fun: Two Happy Hours this Week in DC!

One of the perks of my job is that I get to organize and host various happy hours for our clients and groups we’re involved with. It just so happens that this week, I get to do it twice!

Our first happy hour was on Tuesday night right here at our Dupont Circle office. We partnered with SBNOW in inviting their members to mingle and munch on some snacks and drinks while listening to our fearless CEO, Ryan Ozimek, discuss how technology can help businesses become more sustainable.  This correlates directly to SBNOW’s mission of transforming “the ways businesses appraise, engage, and enhance human, ecological, and financial resources in order to make the national capital region a better place to live, work, visit, and do business.” Thanks to all who made that event possible and attended!

This week’s second happy hour happens tonight at 6 pm at Madam’s Organ in Adams Morgan. NTEN, a group I’ve been coordinating events with for a year and a half, is partnering with Community of Hope for a Happy Hour of Hope. Madam’s Organ is having drink specials, I will be ordering some appetizers for our attendees, and best yet – a portion of all proceeds will go toward Community of Hope! Didn’t register? No problem – there’s still time, so do so here.

Register Now for the Bay Area Nonprofit Technology Teach-In

Bay Area non-profit techies, mark January 18th on your calendars! Our friends at Aspiration have partnered with Community Technology Network to hold a no cost nonprofit technology training at the Google campus in Mountain View, CA on January 18th.

This Nonprofit Technology Teach-In aims to help you learn new techniques and best practices to take advantage of online tools for your work. Aspiration events are famously hands-on, highly interactive and follow a question-driven format.

Together you’ll tackle the following questions:

  • How can I write a good email message and send it to thousands of folks?
  • How can I track where my nonprofit and issues are being mentioned online?
  • How can I use social media to support campaigns and advocacy?
  • How can I better organize my online communications?
