With Oscar season upon us, we’re seeing frequent trailers for films nominated for the little golden trophy. One trailer, that for Django Unchained, contains a line that has us feeling philosophical about your nonprofit and its online presence.

Interwebs unite!: Tying together your nonprofit social media and website channels

Social media logosThere are so many ways to promote your organization online today.  Indeed, you may be returning to work with a raft of 2013 resolutions to do just that.

Social communities have exploded over the past few years.  In working with our clients in the Support Department as well as promoting my own after-work projects, I know it feels like you have to be everywhere at once.  It seems that if you aren’t taking advantage of every angle, then you are missing something. But just try to keep up with Facebook, Google+, Twitter, Instagram, Flickr, LinkedIn, Feedburner, the new MySpace and on and on and on… not to mention your own website… it can be exhausting.

Two less characters in your Tweets with links come February

Made any New Year’s Resolutions yet? If you do social media for your nonprofit, one of them should be to tighten up the length of your Tweets containing links beginning in February.

Twitter announced on Thursday that they’ll be expanding the length of links included in Tweets by two characters:

“We’re going to be extending the maximum length of wrapped links from 20 to 22 characters for non-https URLs, and 21 to 23 characters for https URLs.”

That goes for links that Twitter shortens for you when you use their user interface. It also goes for links from other link shortening services like or Hootsuite’s Twitter wraps each of these urls in its own link while keeping the original link visible to your readers. That means that those links end up being 20 characters, or 21, respectively – even if the original link was shorter.

Until February, that is, when they get kicked up to 22 and 23.

What does that leave us to do? Come February, you’ll need to tighten up:

One of the best aspects of working at PICnet is the talented, passionate people it attracts as fellow PICnetters. I’m energized each day by my colleagues and their commitment to improving the public good in meaningful, tangible ways.

Michael’s innovative work on the cutting edge of an emerging movement is inspiring to see and helps to inform the work he does at PICnet while we look to innovate and anticipate the needs of our clients and the nonprofit sector as a whole.

Social Media Sewing Circle in SF – Sign up now!

Our PICnet friend and partner Aspiration is hosting a “Social Media Sewing Circle” from 1-4pm, Sept. 15, as part of “Mozilla Service Week,” in San Francisco. They will be hosting a few free sessions such as: Social Media Tracking, Publishing strategies for social media channels, Facebook and Twitter Essentials, and Beginning and advanced blogging skills.
